Broadway Market

Plonked pleasantly between Regent’s Canal’s bobbing boats and the lovely London Fields, on a bustling street in East Hackney sits Broadway Market. This historic trading place, a stone’s throw from tonnes of wonderful London experiences, offers a brilliant London experience in its own right.

First established along a drover’s route into the city in the 1890s, today locals and tourists alike head to the market to enjoy its ravishing street food, buzzing restaurants, beautifully fresh produce, original art, exciting fashion and local crafts. Lined with plenty of enticing shops, cafes and restaurants during the week, on Saturdays the area comes alive with both Broadway’s Street Market and Schoolyard Market open from 9am-5pm.

Broadway Market is a very popular spot with those in the know. London reviewer Stacey of claims: "I would have to say my favourite market is Broadway Market - I remember the first time I visited, it felt like I'd ""come home"". I adore it", while foodie Shayan Saki from Life of Shayan explains why he thinks Broadway Market is great: "I enjoy Broadway Market for its variety of shops, restaurants, bars and pubs. The laid-back nature of it all welcomes you in and keep you relaxed and happy".

On Saturdays the market becomes a labyrinth and treasure-trove of vendors, with over 135 stalls on the street alone, with many more in the area’s Schoolyard market. Crammed with everything from unique items from local designers, to artisan bread and mouthwatering souvlaki from Isle of Olive, there’s something to tempt every browser at Broadway Market, even embroidery classes from Fabrications!

Amongst the vibrant, friendly clamour of the Saturday market, hungry market-goers should seek out Deeney’s famed haggis toastie, known as "The Macbeth", packed with haggis, cheddar, rocket and caramelised onion. Broadway Market allowed Deeney’s founder Carol to escape her office job and "get back in the kitchen and cooking for others. Street food was the easiest, safest and most instantly rewarding ways to do this. Street food also allows you to be incredibly flexible and you can keep changing up your menu until you find your signature dish". For equally addictive street food goodness, don’t miss Makatcha’s beef rendang which has its very own cult following.

Other vendors whose scrummy wares are well worth sampling include Butchies.

There is no shortage of great things to do in Broadway Market, especially throughout spring and summer. Life of Shayan food blogger Shayan Saki says: "The parks and pubs make Broadway Market a destination for tourists and Londoners alike. Columbia Road Flower Market on the other side of the park is a treat on Sundays, but get there early". reviewer Stacey prefers dining al fresco in the local area on pleasant afternoons: "If the sun is shining, I like to grab a pizza from Broadway Market and take it down to the canal with a few beers!".

If the canals don’t appeal to you, saunterers will find London Fields a few minutes’ north; a lovely green space, complete with its own lido, ideal for an open-air dip or simply some people watching in warm weather. Don’t forget to take a right at the northern end of Broadway Market and head down Westgate Street to check out Netil Market too.

For the more artistically inclined, there’s plenty of interesting contemporary art to be uncovered in the area. Check out the innovative and independent Transition gallery, stop in at Space In Between or explore creativity in motion at the studios of SPACE. For something more active and seriously out-of-this-world, book a "real life" London adventure game at Time Run, just to the east of London Fields.

Feeling thirsty? Londom Fields Brewery has a tipple in their taproom to tempt you, while the Broadway Market Cat & Mutton pub offers a dependable bevvy, with solid fare if you’re still peckish. For something sit-down and really special however, try out Argentine restaurant Buem Ayre’s sharing platter.
